Hexagram 44
姤 Gòu · Encounter
Legge: Kau
☰ Heaven (Qián) above ☴ Wind, wood (Xùn)
Scryway summary
Modern commentary written for Scryway. Not part of the classic text.
An unexpected meeting with something strong. Weigh what you allow in.
The judgment
Kau shows a female who is bold and strong. It will not be good to marry (such) a female.
The image
(The trigram representing) wind and that for the sky above it form Kau. The sovereign, in accordance with this, delivers his charges, and promulgates his announcements throughout the four quarters (of the kingdom).
The lines, bottom to top
- Bottom line, broken
The first line, divided, shows how its subject should be kept (like a carriage) tied and fastened to a metal drag, in which case with firm correctness there will be good fortune. (But) if he move in any direction, evil will appear. He will be (like) a lean pig, which is sure to keep jumping about.
- Second line, solid
The second line, undivided, shows its subject with a wallet of fish. There will be no error. But it will not be well to let (the subject of the first line) go forward to the guests.
- Third line, solid
The third line, undivided, shows one from whose buttocks the skin has been stripped so that he walks with difficulty. The position is perilous, but there will be no great error.
- Fourth line, solid
The fourth line, undivided, shows its subject with his wallet, but no fish in it. This will give rise to evil.
- Fifth line, solid
The fifth line, undivided, (shows its subject as) a medlar tree overspreading the gourd (beneath it). If he keep his brilliant qualities concealed, (a good issue) will descend (as) from Heaven.
- Top line, solid
The sixth line, undivided, shows its subject receiving others on his horns. There will be occasion for regret, but there will be no error.

Richard Wilhelm’s text and commentary
Wilhelm’s German translation of 1924, with his commentary, translated into English for Scryway. His reading often differs from Legge’s, and many readers find his commentary the clearest guide to a hexagram.
Wilhelm: Coming to Meet
The sign points to a situation in which the dark principle, after having been removed, secretly and unexpectedly forces its way back in from within and below. The feminine comes of its own accord to meet the men. This is a dangerous and unfavourable situation because of its possible consequences, which must be recognised in good time and so prevented.
The sign is assigned to the fifth month (June-July), because with the summer solstice the dark principle gradually begins to rise again.
The judgment
Coming to meet. The maiden is powerful. One should not marry such a maiden.
Wilhelm’s commentary
The rise of what is petty is drawn under the image of a bold girl who gives herself away lightly and in this way seizes power. This would not be possible if the strong and light did not, for its part, also come to meet her. The petty looks so harmless and flattering that one takes pleasure in it. It looks so small and weak that one thinks one can trifle with it without worry.
So the petty person rises only because the noble one considers him harmless and lends him power. If one opposed him from the very beginning, he could never gain influence.
But the time of coming to meet has yet another side, which deserves attention. Though the weak coming to meet the strong must not be the rule, it nevertheless has great significance at times. When heaven and earth come to meet each other, all creatures prosper. When prince and helper come to meet each other, the world is put in order. A mutual coming to meet of the principles that are destined for each other and depend on each other is necessary. Only it must be free of impure ulterior motives; otherwise it is an evil.
The image
Under heaven is the wind: the image of coming to meet. Thus does the prince in spreading his commands and proclaiming them to the four quarters of heaven.
Wilhelm’s commentary
The situation is similar to that of the sign “Contemplation” (No. 20). There the wind blows over the earth, here it blows under heaven. In both cases it reaches everywhere. But whereas there the wind was down on the earth, which gave the image of the ruler taking note of conditions, here the wind blows from above; this points to the influence the ruler exerts through his commands. Heaven is far from the things on earth, but it sets them in motion through the wind. The ruler is far from the people, but he sets them in motion through his commands and the expressions of his will.
The lines, bottom to top
- Bottom line, a six
It must be checked with a brake of bronze. Steadfastness brings good fortune. If one lets it go its way, one meets misfortune. Even a lean pig has it in its nature to rampage.
Wilhelm’s commentary
When an inferior element has crept in, one must check it at once and energetically. By checking it consistently, one can avoid bad effects. If one lets it run its course, misfortune is sure to come of it. One must not be led by the slightness of what creeps in to take it too lightly. As long as a pig is still young and lean it cannot romp about much, but once it has eaten its fill and grown strong, its true nature comes out, unless one has restrained it beforehand.
- Second line, a nine
There is a fish in the tank. No fault! Not favourable for guests.
Wilhelm’s commentary
The lower element is not violated, but kept under gentle control. Then there is nothing bad to fear. Only one must see to it that it does not come together with those further off, because, once let loose, it would unfold its bad sides unchecked.
- Third line, a nine
There is no skin on the thighs, and walking is hard. If one is mindful of the danger, one makes no great mistake.
Wilhelm’s commentary
One is inwardly tempted to become involved with the bad element that offers itself. This is a very dangerous situation. Fortunately one is hindered from it by circumstances. One would like to, but cannot. This produces a painful indecision in action. But if one becomes clear about how dangerous the situation is, one will at least avoid greater mistakes.
- Fourth line, a nine
There is no fish in the tank. From this misfortune arises.
Wilhelm’s commentary
One must tolerate the little people so that they remain well disposed. Then one can also make use of them when one needs them. If one becomes estranged from them and does not come to meet them, they turn away, and one does not have them at one’s disposal when one needs them. But then one has only oneself to blame.
- Fifth line, a nine
A melon covered with willow leaves: hidden lines. Then it falls to one from heaven.
Wilhelm’s commentary
The melon, like the fish, is a symbol of the dark principle. It is sweet but spoils easily, which is why it is covered protectively with willow leaves. The situation is such that a strong, highly placed person, firm in himself, tolerates and protects the lowly who are in his hand. He has within himself the firm lines of order and beauty. But he does not assert them. He does not burden them with outward display or tiresome admonitions, but leaves them quite free, in firm trust in the inwardly transforming power that dwells in a strong and pure personality. And behold! Fate is favourable. The lowly are influenced and fall to him like ripe fruit.
- Top line, a nine
He comes to meet with his horns. Humiliation. No fault.
Wilhelm’s commentary
When one has withdrawn from the world, its bustle often becomes unbearable. There are often people who, in noble pride, keep apart from everything petty and rebuff it brusquely where it comes to meet them. Such people are reproached as proud and unapproachable, but since they are no longer bound to the world by duties of action, this does not matter much. They know how to bear the dislike of the crowd with composure.
Wilhelm’s German original
44. Gou / Das Entgegenkommen
